Lesson 1 - Obstacle Courses
Your Mess
You will need: cones & a selection of balls
- Split the PE area into 2 equal areas. divide the balls between both sides.
- Divide the class into two groups.
- On the whistle, students try to roll all the balls out of their half into the other teams half - Students must only roll the balls.
- After 1 minute, the teacher blows the whistle to stop. The winning team has the least number of balls on their side.
- Reset the balls and repeat a number of times.
For this part of the lesson, spend 5 minutes teaching and practicing the 'Star Movement of the Day'. Use the poster below or printable attached to directly teach your students the correct technique.

ZigZag Race
You will need: no equipment
- Divide students into 2-3 groups and ask them to form a large circle. Number the students in each circle.
- At the start of each race the teacher calls “ On your marks…..get set…” and then a number.
- The numbered student makes their way around the circle weaving and dodging in and around their teammates until they get back to their starting spot.
- Repeat the call, changing the number.
Obstacle Course
You will need: obstacle course mapping cards, cones, hoops, spot markers, skipping ropes, beanbags, racket, balls, hurdles etc.
- Create teams of 5-7 and give each team a course card to follow.
- Layout the equipment needed for the course cards.
- Allow 5 minutes for course creation and practice.
- After 5 minutes each group explains and demonstrates their obstacle course.
- Rotate the groups around the courses, allowing each group to complete others designs.

Stone Statue
You will need: no equipment
- Students find their own space in the PE area.
- Students move around the space using any movements they like at a fast speed.
- After a short amount of time the teacher 'casts a spell.'
- Students must begin to slowly to turn to stone. Students movements get slower, and more 'difficult' as they gradually turn to stone.
