Lesson 2 - Listen & Move
Animal Movements - Listen & Move
You will need: speaker, listen and move
- Ask students to find their own space in the playing area.
- Inform the class that you are going to play a song which will ask them to move in different ways around the hall like different animals.
- Play the attached song and explore the animal actions students create.
For this part of the lesson, spend 5 minutes teaching and practicing the 'Star Movement of the Day'. Use the poster below or printable attached to directly teach your students the correct technique. Provide students time to practice the correct technique using the activity provided on the poster.
Meeting Axial
You will need: axial flashcards, marker spots, speaker, music (recommended African drum music)
- Sit with students, on spot markers in a circle, and talk about your friend 'Axial' - He likes to shape his body in different ways but does not like to move from his spot or move around the room. He likes to: bend, stretch, twist, curl.... how else could he shape his body?
- Ask students what actions they can you do with your arms, legs or body without moving from their spot.
- Play music and show the class one of the axial movements cards. Ask students to try and do the axial movements on their spot. Ask students to be as creative as possible e.g. twist your arms, legs or body whilst sitting down or standing up.
- When the teacher pauses the music students freeze in their axial position allowing time for the teacher to praise and point out the different creative axial positions around the room.
- Repeat with a number of axial cards.
