Lesson 3 - Mirror Tag

African Savannah Stretch

You will need: Savannah Stretch prompts (printable), speaker, music (suggested african drum music)

  • Ask students to find their own space in the PE area,
  • Explain to the class that at the start of each morning all the animals on the African Savannah come together to stretch and move their bodies.
  • Play the music attached and begin stretching with the class. Use the Savannah Stretch Prompts (printable) attached or use your own stretches.

Mirror Tag

You will need: balancing star movement 1 (printable), 2 beanbags

  • Before beginning the game, spend 5 minutes discussing and practice balancing star movement 1 (printable).
  • Game: The African meerkats favourite balance game is called mirror tag.
  • Choose 2 students to be the meerkats taggers and provide them with a beanbag, to tag with, each.
  • When the whistle blows the remaining students run around the room avoiding the meerkats.
  • If a student is tagged they perform and hold a balance of their choosing.
  • To be freed their meerkat friend must stand in front of them and hold the same balance for 3 seconds. 

Freeze Dance

You will need: speaker, music (suggested I Like to Move it Move it)

  • Ask students to dance around the room as creatively as they like.
  • When the music stops students must FREEZE still so the predator on the Savannah (the teacher) doesn't see them move.
  • If the predator sees them moving students step into the predators den (step out of the game).
  • Students frozen out may join back into the game the next time the music is stopped.
