I Like to Move It Move It

Jogging

You will need: no equipment

  • Sit students down and discuss the skill of jogging: Jogging is when we move faster then walking but slower then sprinting (Not to fast, not to slow, just right)
  • Remind students when jogging to keep their head still and looking forwards, gently moving their arms at a steady speed with a smile on our face and words in our mouth.
  • Challenge students to jog around the PE area with a partner for 2 minutes while talking about their favourite animals.

For this part of the lesson, spend 5 minutes teaching and practicing the 'Star Movement of the Day'. Use the poster below or printable attached to directly teach your students the correct technique. Provide students time to practice the correct technique using the activity provided on the poster.

Move it, Move it!

You will need: cones, spot markers

  • Divide students into groups and line them at a cone at one end of the playing area. Place a second cone at the far end of the playing area, for each team, and a third cone halfway between the first two.
  • Explain to students that teams will have a relay race with 3 challenges - walk from the first cone to the second cone, jog from the second to the third cone and sprint from the third cone back to the start before high fiving the next person on their team to go.
  • Each member races once. Which team will be the fastest?

Changing Gears - Expert Level

You will need: no equipment

  • In this game half of the class will sit and watch their friends and the other half will move around the vet's recovery pen 4 different ways.
  • Ask students to begin walking around the playing area but to listen out for the teachers calls: 1st gear = walk, 2nd gear = jog, 3rd gear = run & 4th gear = sprint
  • This time, on expert level, students listen carefully to the type of pathway the teacher calls out before each gear change e.g. 1st gear, zig-zag path.
  • Focus on finishing the lesson with 1st gear and 2nd gear to get students ready to return to class.
