Jumping Stations
Rock, Paper, Scissors Pike
You will need: gymnastic mats, Rock, Paper, Scissors, Pike Flashcards (printable)
- Place mats around the playing area and sit 2-4 students per mat.
- Revise tuck, straight, straddle and pike positions with students using gymnastic basic shape flashcards.
- Choose one of the 4 shapes (see below) from the attached shape cards and hold it close to their chest.
- Call out “rock-paper-scissors - pike” 5,4,3,2,1 - giving students 5 seconds to get into position and then show your card:
- Tuck sit = rock
- Lying down pencil (straight) = paper
- Straddle sit = scissors
- Pike position = pike
- If a student matches the teacher, they complete an exercise challenge such as ten jumping jacks before returning to the game.
For this part of the lesson, spend 5 minutes teaching and practicing the 'Star Movement of the Day'. Use the poster below or printable attached to directly teach your students the correct technique. Provide students time to practice the correct technique using the activity provided on the poster.
Balance Beam Walk
You will need: Chalk/Beam/Bench
- Divide the class into groups of 3.
- Using a beam, bench or even a chalk line, the students must walk heel to toe along the beam/bench/line.
- Remind students to raise their arms out to the side, like an aeroplane, to maintain their balance.
- Speeding up makes the challenge harder.
- As the students perfect the chalk and bench, they may progress to the beam.
Jumping Circuits
You will need: cones, station cards (printable), benches, gymnastic mats & spot markers
- Revise Jumps - Tuck jump & star jump
- Discuss jumping safely (bending knees to land, chest should be up, hands do not touch the floor).
- Set up 5 stations, divide students into teams with teams rotating around the stations:
- Station 1: Tuck jump from a bench
- Station 2: Star jump from bench
- Station 3: Walk along bench and tuck jump off
- Station 4: Walk along bench and star jump off
- Station 5: backward rock

Climb the Wall
You will need: no equipment
- Ask students to find their own space in the PE area.
- Students pretend to be Humpty Dumpty climbing back up the wall to reach the top of the wall.
- Students stretch out their arms and knees, climbing up for 30 seconds to reach the top.
- Students rest by imagining sitting on top of the wall, before falling off the wall onto the ground.
- Repeat until cool.
