Lesson 6 - Jumping Space Stations

Alien Bridges & Barriers

You will need: bibs

  • Select 3-5 students as alien taggers who wear bibs.
  • The rest of the class, the 'astronauts', travel around the PE space, trying to avoid being tagged.
  • If tagged, students must adopt the ‘front support’ position (bridge). To be set free, another student must crawl underneath them.
  • Players can also adopt the ‘rear support’ position (barriers), and to be set free another student must jump over them.
  • Play each round for 1-3 mins.
  • After each round change the way 'astronauts' travel i.e., skipping, galloping etc.

Jumping Space Stations

You will need: hula hoops, cones, gymnastic mats, spot markers & Jumping Space Station cards (printable)

  • Directly teach Rocket Jumps (pencil jumps) - arms straight up by ears, legs and feet squeezed together, head and chest up so that back is straight.
  • Set up 5 'space stations', divide students into astronaut teams with teams rotating around the stations:
  • Station 1: Children to practice 'Rocket' Jumps.
  • Station 2: Place a hoop on the floor, children to do a 'rocket' jump to land back inside the hoop.
  • Station 3: Space Bunny Hops. Children imagine they are space bunnies. Children to crouch down and practice bunny hopping along the mats.
  • Station 4: Place a hoop on the floor, children to practice jumping onto the 'planet' and then back off the 'planet'.
  • Station 5: Low Bench, children to 'rocket' jump from the bench to the floor.

Climb the Wall

You will need: no equipment

  • Ask students to find their own space in the PE area.
  • Students pretend to be Humpty Dumpty climbing up the wall after falling down.
  • Students climb back up a really tall ladder to reach the top of the wall where they sit down(squat), stretch out their arms before falling off the wall again. Do this for 30 seconds.
  • Rest, then repeat climbing back up the wall until cool.
