Lesson 5 - Teamwork

Sun & Ice

You will need: blue & yellow beanbags

  • Give 3 students blue beanbags - they are the ice; and 2 other students yellow beanbags - they are the sun.
  • On the whistle the rest of the class run around the playing area avoiding being tagged by the 'ice' beanbags.
  • If tagged by an 'ice' beanbag, students must freeze in a star position. To be freed frozen students must be touched by a 'sun' beanbag

For this part of the lesson, spend 5 minutes teaching and practicing the 'Star Movement of the Day'. Use the poster below or printable attached to directly teach your students the correct technique. Provide students time to practice the correct technique using the activity provided on the poster.

Saucers & Domes

You will need: assortment of cones

  • Spread a large number of cones around the playing area - half facing up (the domes) and half turned upside down (the saucers)
  • Divide the class into two teams - the saucers and the domes, and place at either end of the playing area.'The saucers' team must turn as many cones over like a cat's saucer bowl while 'the domes' team must turn the cones over so that their cones sit up like a dome or mountain.
  • On the whistle, teams move around the hall and try and turn as many as you can so they look like either domes or saucers.
  • After a few minutes blow the whistle and teams return to their starting position allowing the teacher to count the number of domes and saucers.

Train Station

You will need: whistle

  • Pair students up and assign one person is the train driver and one to be the carriage standing behind the driver.
  • The driver walks around quickly in any direction whilst the train carriage follows the driver around the room.
  • When the teacher blows their whistle pairs switch roles quickly.
  • After each whistle blow ask trains to gradually slow the speed from walking, to creeping to standing still.
