Lesson 4 - Follow the Leader

Busy Bee

You will need: optional music

  • When the music starts, ask students to move around the PE space using a locomotor of the teachers choosing e.g. hopping.
  • Stop the music and call out a body part e.g. elbow. Students must find a partner and touch elbows with them.
  • Restart the music calling out a different locomotor e.g. skipping, and different body part for students to match with a friend when the music is paused.
  • Repeat a number of times.

Follow the Leader

You will need: whistle

  • Divide students into families of 4 and ask each family to form a line.
  • The first student in the line will be the leader of the family and will begin to move around the school grounds using their favorite locomotor e.g. skipping. The rest of the students in the family follow and copy the leader's actions.
  • When the teacher blows his/her whistle each group stops and the leader performs a balance of their choice for a count of 5, with their family copying.
  • After, the leader moves to the back of the line and the next student in line will become the leader.

Listening Game

You will need: No Equipment

  • Ask students to find their own space in the PE area. Explain to the class that in the 'Listening Game' the teacher will try to trick and catch them out.
  • Students must listen to the teachers orders and ONLY follow what I say and not what I do. My hands, feet and body will try to trick you. My words will always be true
  • Example: (Say & do...) Hands up, hands down, hands in... on the next call say hands out but instead the teacher puts their hands up to try and trick the students
  • Repeat a number of times.
